I went to college in Terre Haute, Indiana - so I made two longer distance drives (one out and one back) of about 715 miles to get there.
The school was on a trimester schedule so there were two week long breaks - one around Thanksgiving and one in early March - where I had to decide what I was going to do - drive, bus, or fly home (my Grandmom paid for more than one plane ticket) or stay on a very empty campus or drive home with a college buddy.
We drove to Phoenix AZ (and back) one break - a trip of 1500 miles or so - which wouldn't happen today with gas prices being what they are.
And I would have never seen much of OK, TX, NM, Utah, and AZ.
